XXXVI: Foxes

Fox Luring Birds

XXXVI SUHAL

Servitors: Holop, Lagasas, Schalluah Alagas.

The word at the outer edge of the Square, SUHAL, derives from the Hebrew שועל (shua’al), meaning ‘fox’ and ‘cunning.’ The name in the Central Square is a palindromic expression of that of the spirit HOLOP, which originates in the Hebrew חלוף (cholup), meaning ‘transitory’ or ‘ephemeral.’ The word in the second line, UGOMA, may be a derivation of עגמה (ogmah), meaning ‘grief,’ ‘sorrow,’ ‘distress’ or ‘anguish,’ while the reversal of SUHAL, LAHUS, may relate to the root word לחש (lachesh), denoting a ‘spell,’ ‘whisper,’ ‘hiss’ or ‘murmur.’

The Vision

The vision was slow to come, which has not been the case with any of the previous thirty-five experiments. When it came, it began in the same room I was performing the scrying in, with my attention being drawn to an empty bottle of wine on my windowsill. In the vision, I moved to the window in my subtle body, picked up the bottle, then placed it on the floor before me. With it moved away from the window, I was now able to leave exit through it and explore the neighbourhood.

The area I live in has wild foxes living nearby, which I often hear them crying at night and have seen the large dog fox wandering around scavenging several times. In the vision, I found him in one of the places I have seen him before and followed him to the heath a few hundred yards away and followed him into his den. His vixen and cubs were all inside, as were the bones of the dead birds they had feasted upon. On leaving the foxes den, I found myself in the most remote parts of the Heath looking south towards the city. It looked abandoned and seemed to be behind a grey gauze of mist that froze it in time. No people were anywhere to be seen on the Heath either, which is usually busy with runners and dog-walkers.

Standing alone in this desolate version of my familiar world, I realised that foxes and crows were approaching me from all around. I found myself in possession of the wine bottle from the beginning of the vision again and now found it to be full, so I emptied its contents around me in a large circle and sat inside it and waited for the animals to arrive. They confirmed, as they came, that they were not animals, as none of the beasts in these visions have been, but were the spirits and daemons of the land which had been drawn to me because of the magical activities I’d performed in the area. I realised that the circle of wine I had poured on the ground was also an offering to them and that I should ensure to make such offerings to the spirits of the places I work to appease them. This is something I have done for specific spirits in the past, but here I was informed that I should do likewise for the non-specific ones too. As part of my works, I have left offerings of raw meat in certain places, and on one occasion, my doing so was followed very quickly by the appearance of the local dog fox, which no doubt tucked into the meat I had left out. I have also found myself feeding some friendly crows on the Heath on one occasion, so believe the appearance of foxes and crows in this vision very much represents the food I have given those precise creatures on occasion.

Once I had understood that I was being guided towards doing such practices, I had a vision of the Hebrew letters מון which quickly transformed into the letters סון as soon as I attempted to inspect them.

Then the vision changed somewhat, and I found the Heath had changed its appearance into a wilder landscape where I stood on the slopes of a long hill. There, the form of the letter ן from the previous part of the vision transformed into a wooden signpost that pointed to the bottom of the hill. From the signpost to the hill’s base ran a long fence which led to a white rabbit. Seeing it, I turned into a fox and chased it into a hole in the ground that ran beneath the fence. Rather than turning into some wild pursuit of ‘following the white rabbit’ however, I cornered it and devoured it straight away. Once it was eaten, I exited the hole on the opposite side from that which I had entered it through and found myself on the other side of the fence. There, the skies were not grey as they had been on the western side of this divide but were blue and clear. I transformed myself back into human shape and walked along the lush green and damp vegetation until I came to an electricity pylon. The air around it darkened, and it buzzed with the sound of water drops landing on its conductors. In response to the sudden change of climate around the pylon, I changed my form to that of a crow and flew to its top. There I saw that the grey mist only gathered around the pylons that had been built across this landscape, forming a criss-crossing network of misty streaks. Looking to the south I saw a human settlement coming to life, but it was no longer that of the city but of a small town set within a wide valley.

Then, all turned black and the white face of a devil appeared from the darkness and projected the name Agrim to me. Then the image of a goat appeared, and an inner voice spoke of its importance due to it being able to devour and digest all kinds of things. It then trotted away and pacified itself in a bed of leaves where it took on the form of a lamb. And this is where the vision ended.

Notes

Of the servitors who appeared in this vision, Alagas—like Lagasas, who also appears here—has a name that comes the Greek λαγάς (lagas), meaning ‘a hare hunter,’ which fits well with the appearance of a rabbit being devoured by a fox. A spirit previously unseen in this sequence is Schalluah, whose name may derive from the Hebrew שלוה (shaluah), meaning ‘peace’ or ‘serenity.’

The Hebrew words מון (mun/mon) and סון (sun/son) are nonsensical, but appear to be rough transliterations of the English words Moon and Sun.

The name Agrim given by the white-faced devil towards the end of the vision may reflect the Greek word άγριος (agrios) meaning ‘wild,’ ‘savage,’ ‘ferocious’ or ‘lupine.’ The goat becoming the lamb appears to relate to the satiation of the spirits from being fed offerings, which led to their pacification.

The Square was constructed with the Moon at 26º Pisces and was scried with the Moon at 3º Aries.

XXX: Bears

Herne

XXX DOBIH

Servitors: Balabos, Badad, Holop.

The word at the outer edge of the Square, DOBIH, derives from the Hebrew דוב (dob), ‘bear.’ The spirit name apparent in the central cross relates is that of Balabos, which comes from the Hebrew term בעל הבית‎ (ba’al ha-beth), meaning ‘Master of the House.’

The Vision

The vision began with a focus on the word DOBIH which then became further focussed on the letter B (for ‘Bear,’ I sensed) in its centre. Then a cave appeared with a large bear wearing a crown standing on its hind legs guarding its entrance. The bear approached me, making me fear it would maul me, but it only wished to sniff out the Square that I held in my hand. It turned away from me peaceably when I allowed it to inspect what I held, then it departed into the cave. I followed it inside and was greeted by the stench of rotting meat. Around me were the cadavers of many dead animals, with the most prominent being the skull of a horse.

I descended into the cave, where a soft, chiming, echoing choir of voices could be heard in the distance below. I came to a gentle blue river with a milky white sheen to its surface in that deep place and entered the water. I became aware that this was a reflection of the Milky Way and was washed along on its flow until it came to a waterfall. Instead of plunging to the ground far below, however, I remained breathless and bodiless in silent space and glided at will to the ground below.

Awaiting me was an old man driving a rickety wooden cart. He was quite old and wore a ruined top hat, and donned a wispy beard without a moustache, had ruddy red cheeks and had squinting, watery eyes. We were in a dark, rocky landscape quite unsuitable for driving a wagon over, and above me in the sky was a full moon and the constellations of Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, with the latter clearly orbiting the Pole Star. He offered me a ride in his cart and we headed North with Polaris before us. I noticed that the horses that pulled it, one of which was brown and the other black, were very thin and gave off the cold aura of death. He chided me for accepting a ride in such a land, as it was a place I knew nothing about. I asked him what sort of place it was and once again the word DOBIH appeared in my mind’s eye. From this, I accepted that this was the astral landscape unlocked by the Square.

As we trundled on, I became aware that we were being followed by bears, but the wagon driver informed me that I was quite safe as long as I remained in his vehicle. Then we came to a ford which was set down a bank that was too steep and rocky for the wagon to descend. He let the horses off their leashes and asked if I would assist him in pushing the cart down the bank, which I did, noticing that it was strangely light. Then the driver reattached it to the horses so that they could pull it across the shallow waters of the river, but on the other side, he asked once again if I would help him pull it back up the other bank. Doing this was somewhat harder than leading it down the bank, and led to me receiving wounds to my right hand from the splinters of the wood of its pull-handle. Looking at the wound after we got the cart up the opposite bank, I saw that the splinters had caused seven wounds which formed the shape of the Hebrew letter Zayin. The driver instructed me to mix the blood with the waters of the river we had just passed, and on doing this, the sky lightened to that of dawn. In the sky, the Sun lit the sky and Mercury and Venus could both be seen rising with it. Heading towards them, we continued eastward over the rocky land.

After a short distance I noticed a large, primitive-looking, large-toothed skull on the horizon that looked like a fortress at first, but as we approached it, it seemed to reduce in size to that of a small house and it had the appearance of the skull of a crow or raven rather than the fanged, hominid shape I had first seen. When we reached the skull, the driver informed me to leave the cart and go and take refuge inside the skull. I did this and sat inside waiting for something to come. Shortly afterwards, the seven trailing bears appeared and formed a circle outside the skull. Inside, on the floor I spotted a large rock which I picked up and inspected. On it was engraved the symbol for alchemical Sulphur.

After a brief period, the eighth figure appeared outside the skull-house, coming in the form of a man with the skeletal, antlered head of a stag. The figure came to the entrance of the skull-house and drew a sword. With it, he drew the sign of Alchemical Salt in the Earth and then thrust his sword into the centre of it. On doing this, all of the Earth around the skull-house disappeared into a void of nothingness. I stepped from my refuge into the stillness, where the stag-headed figure informed me that it was this state of Nothingness that I should be aiming for in my Work, and that the visions of the Squares were all guides in same way of how to achieve this state. On hearing this, I found myself on a cold shore, over which the sun set. Facing West, I saw a rickety boat, similar in its state of disrepair as the wagon I had earlier travelled. I thought about heading out towards the boat but was told that this was not the time to do such a thing, as the boat and the sea represented the journey to the lands beyond life. I sat patiently at the shore waiting for something to happen, but nothing did. After a few more moments, an Eagle flew towards me from over the sea and told me that there was nothing else to see in this vision. Accepting that, I ended the session.

Notes

The wound I received in the shape of the letter Zayin represents the number seven and has the meaning ‘Sword,’ both of which are relevant to this vision. Zayin is also related to Gemini in the Tarot, so this may also be a signal to pay attention to something relating to Gemini. See the visions pertaining to A Lion and A Wild Cat for specific references to Gemini, though the relevance may relate to a future rather than past vision.

Alchemical Sulphur represents the active male principle, being concordant with Fire and the Sun.

The appearance of the Sun with Mercury and Venus after I mixed my blood with the waters of the river may represent the feminine principle, with Alchemical Mercury representing the passive female element, as does the planet Venus.

Alchemical Salt represents the element of Earth that becomes purified through the interaction of Sulphur and Mercury. The striking of the Earth by the sword in the centre of the symbol for Salt represents the purification of matter in such a way, with the Sword being used to do so being reflected in the letter Zayin appearing in the wounds on my hand. Seven also relates to Venus in Qabalistic Magic, the number of stars in Ursa Minor as well as the number of stars in the Big Dipper asterism of Ursa Major.

The boat on the sea was similar to the one seen in the vision of Trees, in which the spirit in the form of an old man departed over the sea.

The names of the two ‘new’ spirits seen in this vision are Badad – בדד (badad), whose name means ‘alone’ or ‘solitary’ and Holop – חלוף (cholop), whose name means ‘transitory’ or ‘ephemeral.’

The Square was constructed with the Moon at 3º Taurus and scried with the Moon at 22º Scorpio. Venus was transiting the sign of Scorpio at the time of the scrying, where she is in her Detriment, as was the other benefic, Jupiter, Together they represent the male and female benefics resident in a Marsian, malefic sign, though the general energies of Scorpio, being the sign that Mars rules ‘at night’ are those of his passive, ‘inner’ qualities.

XIII Farm Buildings

The word at the outer edges of the square, MELUNAH, comes from the Hebrew מלונה (melunah), meaning ‘doghouse’ or ‘kennel.’ The word in the central cross derives from the name of the spirit Ugesor, which may come from the Hebrew גשר (gesor), meaning ‘bridge.’

The Vision

A field being furrowed by an old-fashioned plough appeared. Alongside it was an old Land Rover with an ‘R’ suffix in its licence plate. When they reached the edge of the field they headed into a large barn, the door of which closed behind them and were locked shut with a padlock and chain. Moving away from the barn, I moved towards a central courtyard of a farm that I recognised as one I spent much time on with my Aunt and Uncle as a child, though the buildings that surrounded it were not the same.

The first building was the locked barn I had left behind me. The second, to my left, was a chicken coop. Going clockwise from there, the third building consisted of a barred door which a German Shepherd stood behind. It had the appearance of a guard dog, but cried in excitement when it saw me, as though I were known to it. The fourth place, in front of me, was a house, the door of which was open and revealed a seductive woman hiding in the shadows inside. The fifth was a pen containing many cows and the sixth, to my right, was a church with a great shining cross glowing through its doorway. The seventh and final building, which was positioned behind me and just to the right of the barn, was a long, single-storeyed hall that was thick with shadows inside. This was the building I decided to enter.

Once I was inside, the door slammed shut behind me and I saw a table that almost ran the length of the hall. It was covered with a feast, with the most prominent food being the bunches of grapes that lay either side of a single candle, which was the room’s only source of light. I sat at the table, but before I could decide whether I wished to eat any of the food provided, a rasping female voice filled the darkness.

‘It’s interesting that you come here, to the only place where you didn’t know what lay inside,’ it said. ‘This is why you are suitable for this purpose.’ It proceeded to speak of many things with me, both asking questions and giving guidance, and I felt a sense of snakes crawling all over the floor whenever I spoke back to her.

Then, the bearer of the voice told me to take the candle that lay on the table, as it would be my only guide in the world of darkness ahead. First however, I had to burn my hand with its flame to prove my courage. As a point of synchronicity, there really was a single candle on a table before me in the ‘real’ world in which I sat in a chair performing this work, so, in both the astral and material planes, I picked up a candle with my left hand and slowly passed my right hand through it three times making the hair on the side of my hand burn. The smell created by that burning, the spirit told me, made an effective fumigation that would be suitable as an offering to spirits of an infernal nature, as would the smell of burning flesh. One of the questions it asked was why I didn’t descend into the spiral staircase ‘they’ had shown me in the vision of the Wild Animals. I answered that I had to wade through enough shit in my mundane life every day so didn’t wish to further taint myself needlessly. She told me that the filth of the material world was nothing to be concerned about as it could be washed away with ease and did not affect you once it was gone. The filth of the spiritual kind, however, was indelible and made one grow darker and more stained with every contact with it and nothing in existence could remove it.

The voice, though female, was deep and rasping, and I felt a large python winding its way up my right leg as she spoke again. Then she asked me to burn my hand again, and this time until I felt a degree of pain. I did this by placing my hand about six inches above the flame, where I left it for a few moments until I whipped it away.

‘One day,’ the voice spoke, ‘when your tolerance to fire becomes great enough, you will willingly set your whole body aflame to obtain what we offer. You would burn yourself into nothing to attain it, and in doing so you would become one with the infinite and know all the secrets that lie hidden in the great darkness.’

Then, in an instant, I found myself within the church I had seen in the western quarter of the farm’s courtyard. Inside, a black woman with short hair and wearing a silk garb the colour of lapis lazuli was leaning over a wooden rail near the altar and reaching to retrieve something from a bag. After a few seconds, she pulled out an egg and hurled it to the floor. A baby snake wriggled in its ruin, with the splattered albumen being the colour of blood. The black woman then turned to me and said ‘stamp on it!’ I refused and she asked me why with anger and annoyance in her tone. I stated that I believed the serpent was sacred, representing healing and wisdom and was the symbol and means for our path to gnosis. As I said this I noticed that there was a huge white statue behind the altar rail and the sun from a window to the east of the church was shining on its face to form a letter ‘T’ over its brow and nose. The woman, regarding the statue said that as I was in the church of He Who Trod The Snake Underfoot, it was my duty to do him honour and stamp on the snake. Again I refused and saw that the rest of the body’s statue took the form of a great giant with its sandalled foot crushing the head of a large serpent. The woman then fled from the church laughing maniacally and telling me I would regret my disobedience.

After she left, I noticed that the T-shaped shaft of sunlight came from a window of the same form high above. I stood in the centre of a circular chamber at the church’s centre and let the letter fall upon my face. Then, the letters I, S, A and S all beamed through another four windows spaced equidistantly around the dome that encircled the roof, with an equal amount of sunlight shining through each. All of the beams that came from these letters shone at once upon my face, writing the word TISAS on me, each letter merging into a single mass of sunlight. With the light blinding me, another female voice spoke, demanding that I place my candle down in the east before her and burn some item close at hand in its flame as an offering to her. This I did, and she instantly gave me some of her teachings though I can’t reveal more of the what she taught me here. Following her tutorage, a chorus of spirits danced and chanted lines the main female spirit prompted them to repeat in the church’s undercroft before I exited into sunlight to see a brief vision of a Magpie and a Swift before the vision came to an end.

Notes

The volume of information coming from this Square was copious, possibly due to its containing the names of twenty-six different spirits. The most dominant voice was that of a powerful female spirit, which appeared consistent throughout but grew significantly stronger when the five-lettered beam of sunlight shone through the church windows to illuminate my face. The word given in this part, TISAS, appears to form the outer edges of a new word square, with the name SIGIS fitting quite naturally into the central cross. Considering the appearance of dancing, chanting spirits in the church’s crypt after the appearance of these letters, it is possible that TISAS may derive from the Ancient Greek θίασος (thiasos) and the Latin derivation thiasus which denotes a congregation of singers and dancers gathered together in celebration.

TISAS

A mild synchronicity occurred after the vision, which ended with images of a Magpie and a Swift, when I hit the shuffle button on my music player to find the song Black Swift coming on.

At the beginning of the vision, an old Land Rover with an ‘R’ suffix appeared. In the UK, vehicles with this suffix would have been registered new between September 1976 and August 1977, which was the period in which I was born.

The appearance of the word Melunah in the square is interesting because the spirit who appeared as a horse in the previous vision gave its name as Melenhor, which was also the name of an old familiar of mine who I previously recalled demanding a human or animal bone to dwell within while it was in my service. It wasn’t until I began the preparatory work for this square the day after working with the one which caused Paddocks and Fields to be seen that I put this connection together. Melenhor’s name would therefore appear to be a derivation of this word which, meaning ‘kennel’ is relevant to a vision in which hunting dogs were prominent and is also befitting of a vision in which the images of farm buildings are evoked. A solitary dog appeared in the vision, but it seemed to bear no relation to the hunting hounds that appeared in the visual content of the previous square.

The interpretations I made of the meanings of the prominent names and words of the square didn’t seem to express themselves very overtly, with the dog kennel appearing only briefly and no real connection to the word ‘bridge’ appearing at all. Of the new names that appeared in this square, the following meanings may be attributed.

Holop – חלוף (cholup) – ‘transitory,’ ‘ephemeral.’
Alagas – Possible derivation of λαγάς (lagas) – ‘a hare hunter.’ See tags for Lagasas.
Alluph – אלוף (alup) – ‘domestication.’

Parasur – Possibly from the Latin paras meaning ‘to provide.’ May also originate from פרס (peras) – ‘reward,’ ‘prize.’
